Jennings Middle School Teacher Arrested For Child Abuse: Hillsborough County Sheriff

SEFFNER, Fla. – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested John Steele, 34, a teacher at Jennings Middle School, following an investigation into an alleged altercation with a 12-year-old student during gym class.

On December 18, 2024, detectives were alerted to a gym class incident in which the student was playing with a volleyball that accidentally struck Steele on the chin after she attempted to kick it.

According to investigators, Steele responded by yelling at the student, moving toward her, placing his foot behind her, and using his left arm to shove her onto her back. While the student did not sustain visible injuries, she reported experiencing back pain.

Steele was arrested on December 23, 2024, and charged with one count of Child Abuse.

Sheriff Chad Chronister condemned Steele’s actions, emphasizing the responsibility of teachers to protect and support their students.

“No child should ever feel threatened or unsafe by their teacher. This behavior is unacceptable, especially from someone entrusted with caring for and guiding our kids,” said Chronsister. “This arrest serves as a reminder that we will not tolerate behavior that jeopardizes the safety of our community’s most vulnerable members.”
