James Carville Says Democrats Done Picking Candidates Based On Identity

Democratic strategist James Carville asserted during a Thursday podcast that the Democratic Party will no longer select its candidates based on their gender, race or ethnicity.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Kamala Harris were the first two female nominees of the Democratic Party in 2016 and 2024 and both lost to President Donald Trump. Carville, on “Politics War Room,” said his party will now prioritize electoral victories over identity.

“No one gives a shit anymore in the Democratic Party what gender you are, what race you are, what ethnicity you are. They just want to win … I really believe this is permeating deep in the Democratic consciousness: We’re not here to make history. We’re here to make a win,” Carville said. “And whatever we have to do to win this freaking election, we’re going to do that. And I think that any time that the Democratic Party has any other motive other than victory, it screws us up.”

“So just — if it’s a woman candidate that has the best chance to win, for God’s sake, let’s rally behind this candidate. If it’s a male, let’s rally behind that,” he continued. “Whatever it is, the most important criteria is to win the fucking election. Nothing but nothing else counts. And I hear this some — much, much less than I used to. Much less than I used to.”

The Democratic strategist also noted that rather than advocating to anoint Harris, former President Barack Obama reportedly pushed for a contested primary after former President Joe Biden withdrew from the race on July 21.

“He knew. He understood. And you really can’t accuse him very much of being anti-black — I don’t think it would work very well now, would it?” Carville said. “So that’s the number one — no number two — priority: Winning is everything, stupid.”

Biden said in July 2020 that he was choosing between four black women to be his vice presidential pick before picking Harris the following month. The former president also confirmed in January 2022 that he would nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court, selecting Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson the next month.
