Democratic strategist James Carville on Thursday expressed sorrow for President Joe Biden’s end to his long career in politics.
Biden gave a sweeping pardon to his son Hunter on Sunday, conceding his own Department of Justice (DOJ) has engaged in politically motivated actions. Carville, on “Politics War Room,” defended Biden’s decision to pardon his son, but said it reflects the tarnished state of his legacy.

“The most tragic figure in American politics in my lifetime is President Biden. Alright, so he said, ‘I’d never pardon a kid.’ Okay … When anybody says, ‘I never had sex with that person’ or ‘I’d never pardon my kid,’ I don’t pay any attention to it because I think everybody lies about sex and everybody is going to do whatever they’re going to do with their own children,” Carville said. “But the different scenario would be if he would’ve in September of 2023 or August, said that he wasn’t going to run. God damn, we would have won this election. And it wouldn’t have been that close because we’d have had so many freaking talented people that were running.”
“And he would be sitting here right now getting ready to leave on a high note. There would be naming commissions to figure out what we’re going to name after him. He would be the toast of Washington. It would be a Democratic inauguration coming up,” he continued. “Then a new Democratic president could’ve sort of gotten away with commuting any sentence that Hunter Biden got. And … it’d have been some pushback, but in the interest of the Biden family and President Biden’s long and distinguished service of the community, I’m going to commute the sentence. You wouldn’t even have had to have pardoned him.”

The pardon came after months of Biden pledging that he would not intervene after a Delaware jury convicted Hunter in June of knowingly possessing a firearm while being addicted to drugs and making false statements on a purchase from. Hunter had also faced nine charges pertaining to his alleged failure to pay at least $1.4 million in taxes and his alleged filing of falsified tax documents, all of which he pleaded guilty to.
Carville said he “really liked and admired” the president throughout his career and reminisced about when Biden was a young senator.
“All of this is self-inflicted. It’s tragic, it’s sad … It’ll be six years before somebody comes back and talks about all of the stunning things, the manufacturing that he’s brought back … What’s so sad, it didn’t have to be this way,” he said. “He brought it all on himself … At the bottom of this, Joe Biden is and will continue to be the most tragic figure in modern American politics. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.”

[Former President Richard] Nixon was a crook. Biden is the most uncrooked person that you could imagine. I mean, he’s certainly a Washington creature, he’s cozy with lobbyists, but I don’t think he’s a dishonest man, alright? … He didn’t pursue bad policies,” Carville added. “He is the most tolerant, loving, caring, non-prejudiced person you could imagine. And this is what he’s faced with, It’s a fucking shame.”
