Akeel Abdul Jamiel, 45, formerly of South Glens Falls, New York, has been charged with illegally voting in the 2020 presidential election, federal authorities announced Friday.

United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III, FBI Special Agent in Charge Craig L. Tremaroli, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Special Agent in Charge Erin Keegan jointly released the information. According to court documents, Jamiel, an Iraqi national who was not a U.S. citizen at the time, allegedly cast a ballot in Saratoga County, New York, during the November 2020 election.

The charge, outlined in an information filed in federal court, alleges a violation of election law. It is important to note that an information is merely an accusation, and Jamiel is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

“As alleged, Jamiel’s voting in the 2020 election was a callous and illegal act,” stated U.S. Attorney Sarcone. “We will continue to investigate and prosecute illegal schemes aimed at corrupting the election process.”

FBI Special Agent in Charge Tremaroli emphasized the agency’s commitment to election integrity, saying, “Election security is and will continue to be one of the FBI’s highest national security priorities. Americans have a right to expect free and fair elections, and the FBI is committed to working with our partners to seek justice for anyone trying to interfere with the democratic process.”

HSI Special Agent in Charge Keegan echoed these sentiments, calling Jamiel’s alleged actions “an insult to the democratic process” and a “blatant disregard for the sanctity of American constitutional rights.” She commended the collaborative effort of HSI Albany and their law enforcement partners.

The charge against Jamiel carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
