In the wake of significant regional setbacks, Iran is intensifying its military activities, signaling heightened concerns about its security and defense posture. Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naeini, spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said that Iran has doubled the number of military drills this year to address what he described as an “evolving threat landscape.”
Iran’s expanded military exercises come after a series of regional blows, including the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, targeted Israeli strikes on Iranian air defenses and missile production facilities, and the defeats suffered by Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah.

These developments have left Iran feeling increasingly exposed, prompting a significant escalation in its defense preparations.
“We have expanded the participation of brigades engaged in realistic operations,” Naeini told the Financial Times. “This is a direct response to the challenges Iran is facing.”
Naeini revealed that the IRGC and Artesh (Iran’s conventional military) plan to conduct 30 joint land, air, and naval exercises across six western and southern provinces before mid-March, the end of the Iranian year. These drills will culminate in a large naval parade in the Strait of Hormuz in late February, during which Iran intends to showcase new military equipment.

Additionally, Khatam ol Anbia Joint Air Defense Headquarters Commander Brigadier General Ghadir Rahimzadeh announced a nationwide joint air defense exercise near critical infrastructure. This drill will feature “new and unknown systems,” further underscoring Iran’s effort to adapt its defenses in light of recent challenges.
The planned military drills, particularly the naval exercises in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, carry significant geopolitical implications. The strait is a crucial chokepoint for global oil shipments, and any heightened activity in the area is likely to draw international attention. The unveiling of new equipment during the February parade suggests Iran is focused on modernizing its forces amid concerns about its deterrence capabilities.

Iran’s stepped-up military activities also come as its adversaries in the region, including Israel and Gulf states, strengthen their own defense capabilities. Israeli strikes on Iranian-linked targets and the weakening of Iran’s regional proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah, have further eroded Tehran’s influence and compounded its sense of vulnerability.
