The FBI, along with the U.S. intelligence community, confirmed on Monday that Iran orchestrated a cyberattack against former President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
This announcement followed allegations from the Trump campaign earlier in August about a breach involving the unauthorized access and distribution of sensitive campaign data.
According to a joint statement by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), this cyber intrusion forms part of Iran’s broader strategy to influence U.S. electoral outcomes and to sow discord within the American political landscape.
The intelligence agencies noted that such cyber operations and influence campaigns are consistent with Iran’s historical patterns of attempting to undermine confidence in democratic institutions and to complicate U.S. foreign policy efforts that oppose Tehran’s interests.
The statement highlighted Iran’s escalated cyber activities aimed at the 2024 election cycle, particularly targeting presidential campaigns with tactics such as social engineering to access individuals close to these campaigns. The intelligence community has attributed the recent security breach directly to Iranian operatives, indicating a continuing trend of foreign interference in U.S. elections.

In response to these threats, the FBI, leading the interagency threat response, is intensifying efforts to track and counteract these activities, maintaining close communication with the affected parties. The agencies emphasized their commitment to safeguarding the integrity of U.S. elections from foreign influences by working collaboratively with both public and private sector entities to enhance security measures and disrupt potential threats.
