The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has designated the tropical disturbance churning in the Caribbean as Invest 97-L, marking a significant step in its potential development into a tropical depression or storm.
As the system continues its westward track toward Florida, residents are urged to monitor its progress and prepare for possible impacts.
While Invest 97-L is currently producing widespread showers and thunderstorms across the Caribbean, including Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, the system is expected to encounter more favorable conditions for development as it moves into the warm waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Forecast models predict that Invest 97-L could strengthen into a tropical depression or even a tropical storm by this weekend or early next week. While the exact track and intensity remain uncertain, current projections suggest the system could pose a significant threat to Florida, particularly the Gulf Coast.
Formation chances:
- Through 48 hours: Low (20%)
- Through 7 days: Medium (60%)
The potential impacts of Invest 97-L include heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and coastal flooding. The system’s slow movement could exacerbate flooding concerns, as prolonged periods of rainfall could saturate soils and overwhelm drainage systems.
Florida residents are advised to stay vigilant, monitor official forecasts, and review their hurricane preparedness plans. This includes stocking up on essential supplies, securing loose objects outdoors, and having an evacuation plan in place if necessary.
