An international military student’s body has been recovered from a river after authorities received a distress call on Saturday.
According to deputies, on Saturday, Aug. 20, at approximately 1 p.m. the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) received a 911 call about a person in distress at the intersection of Spring Creek and the Chipola River.
Deputies responded and determined an international military student attending training at Fort Rucker had sunk below the water’s surface and could not be located.
The JCSO dive team along with a rescue dive team from Houston County, Alabama, deployed and worked into Sunday morning with no success.
Rescue efforts continued throughout the day Sunday, and a body matching the description of the missing person was discovered at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 22.

Search and Rescue Team, Florida Wildlife Commission, Florida Highway Patrol, Fort Rucker Military Officers, Jackson County Fire Rescue as well as local volunteers. He also appreciates Dickey’s BBQ, Miller and Miller, and Walmart for providing meals for first responders and volunteers,” said JCSO.
