The World Boxing Council headed into 2023 in the most woke way possible. And it still didn’t matter.

Liberals were not happy.

The WBC late last week announced that it was creating a new category for boxers and fight fans alike: the transgender class.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said such a grouping was needed for “safety and inclusion.”

As he said in an interview with The Telegraph, a British news outlet, “It is the time to do this, and we are doing this because of safety and inclusion. We have been the leaders in rules for women’s boxing – so the dangers of a man fighting a woman will never happen because of what we are going to put in place.”

Suliaman added, “In boxing, a man fighting a woman must never be accepted regardless of gender change. There should be no gray area around this, and we want to go into it with transparency and the correct decisions. Woman to man or man to woman transgender change will never be allowed to fight a different gender by birth.”

“We are creating a set of rules and structures so that transgender boxing can take place, as they fully deserve to if they want to box… We’re opening a universal registration in 2023, so that we can understand the boxers that are out there – and we’ll start from there,” he added.

The WBC decision came after several events in recent weeks that followed along these lines.

During a National Hockey League-sponsored amateur tournament that featured all transgender players, a trans man (meaning a biological woman) was injured with a concussion after being hit by a transgender woman (meaning a biological man).

In North Carolina in October, a girl high school volleyball player was injured, with a concussion, after being hit with the ball following a spike from a transgender girl (meaning a man) on the opposing team.

Back in June, the governing body of international swimming posted new rules about transgender athletes’ participation, saying it needed to address a “performance gap” evident when transgender women compete against biological women.

In the latest case, the WBC has been denounced for trying to protect boxers who are biological women.

After the organization announced its new category, a pro-LGBTQ group called Euphoria tweeted, F–k the WBC. The WBC’s comments and policy reflect profound anti-trans beliefs. We condemn this decision in the strongest terms possible.”

“Separate but equal is not equal,” the group added.
