Inmate Death In Pinellas County Jail Under Investigation

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. - Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating the death of 61-year-old inmate Andrew Jancus.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating the death of 61-year-old inmate Andrew Jancus.

According to detectives, Jancus was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on May 4th, 2023, for Failure to Register as a Sexual Offender, Possession of Crack Cocaine, and Possession of Fentanyl.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. on May 30th, 2023, Jancus was transported to a local hospital to treat an ongoing pre-existing health condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Jancus was pronounced deceased.

Detectives say Jancus had a pre-existing medical condition and was transported to and from the hospital multiple times during his incarceration.

At this point in the investigation, detectives have found no evidence that Jancus was involved in any physical altercations or sustained any injuries while incarcerated at the jail.

Next of kin has been notified, deputies say.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.
