Inmate Dies After Apparent Suicide Attempt At Hillsborough County Jail

TAMPA, FL – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is investigating the in-custody death of 52-year-old Marshall Nelson, who was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday.

According to the HCSO, detention deputies discovered Nelson at 2:02 p.m. on February 25, 2025, at the Falkenburg Road Jail. He was found hanging by a bedsheet from the shower door in what appeared to be a suicide attempt.

Deputies and jail medical staff immediately began life-saving measures before Nelson was transported to a local hospital.

Nelson was pronounced dead at the hospital on Wednesday. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death. Nelson’s next of kin has been notified.

Nelson had been incarcerated at the Falkenburg Road Jail since his arrest on January 30, 2025, on 100 counts of Possession of Child Pornography.

The investigation is ongoing.
