HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested a suspect after he stole and fraudulently used an elderly victim’s credit cards to make everyday purchases.
The victim, who has been hospitalized since October 2021, learned that several unauthorized purchases were made using the victim’s credit cards.
Through investigative means, detectives with HCSO’s Economic Crimes Section discovered the suspect, Austin Brooks, 31, made purchases using the victim’s cards at department stores and other local merchants. He also bought cryptocurrency using those same cards.
The victim is at a loss for the purchases Brooks made using cryptocurrency, which totals several thousands of dollars at this time.
Detectives located and arrested Brooks on April 7, 2022. While taking him into custody, detectives also found he was in possession of fentanyl.
He faces charges of Exploitation of a Disabled Adult (Trust), Grand Theft Third Degree ($10,000-$20,000), and Possession of Controlled Substance.
“It is infuriating that this suspect not only took advantage of one of the most vulnerable in our community but did so during a time when the victim should only be focused on their recovery in the hospital,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “He thought he would get away with these crimes knowing the victim was hospitalized, but our detectives’ thorough investigation led them to Brooks.”
The investigation is ongoing. Additional charges are forthcoming. Updates will be released through HCSO’s Public Affairs Office.
