An Indiana school bus driver is facing serious charges after allegedly driving a bus full of children while under the influence of alcohol.

Kayla Pier, 38, was arrested on December 27th following a months-long investigation by the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation began on September 20th, 2024, when students on Pier’s bus reported concerns about her “driving behaviors and mannerisms” to school administrators.

The LaPorte Community School Corporation promptly addressed the situation, stating in a Facebook post that the students “demonstrated exceptional judgment and courage by reporting concerning behavior from their driver.”

Pier was removed from her duties and resigned the same day. The school corporation then received a toxicology report from Pier, which they reported to the police on October 21st.

After a thorough investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Pier, and she surrendered to authorities on December 27th. She is charged with operating while intoxicated and neglect of a dependent.

“The courageous students aboard the bus who reported the behaviors of the accused are publicly commended,” Captain Derek Allen said in a statement. “Their attention to detail and prompt actions may have prevented a tragedy from occurring.”
