President Joe Biden’s COVID policy is rapidly approaching disaster status, a jumble of mixed or reversed messages, incoherent ramblings, and a shady unwillingness to share basic information.
Against that backdrop, former President Donald Trump on Tuesday rallied his faithful against the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest reversal on masking for vaccinated Americans.
“We won’t go back. We won’t mask our children,” Trump said in a statement that referred to the CDC urging school children to wear masks.
“Joe Biden and his administration learned nothing from the last year. Brave Americans learned how to safely and responsibly live and fight back,” continued Trump.
“Don’t surrender to COVID. Don’t go back. Why do Democrats distrust the science? Don’t let this happen to our children and our Country,” Trump concluded.
Trump spoke out as Democrats and their media allies are increasingly called for those who have not been vaccinated to be punished for their choice – even as the rhetorical pounding inflicted on them can be blamed on Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Dr. Anthony Fauci, press secretary Jen Psaki and other administration members whose messaging has been a train wreck during Biden’s first six months in office.
The latest shift on Tuesday came from CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, who cited the Delta variant as necessary to masking up again.
Even though the available data indicates that in “rare cases some vaccinated people may be contagious and spread the virus to others,” that “new science is worrisome and unfortunately warrants an update to our recommendations.”
“Unsurprisingly, this new recommendation is excessively cautious to the point of absurdity,” Reason.com columnist Robby Soave responded on Tuesday.
“The government is essentially saying that vaccinated people must resume indoor mask-wearing, not because the delta variant poses any danger to them or their vaccinated friends and family members, but because the minority of the country that stubbornly refuses to get vaccinated is at risk,” Soave added. “(Note as well that the most at-risk group, senior citizens, have extremely high vaccination rates; the least vaccinated group, young children, are exceedingly unlikely to suffer death from COVID-19.)”
“It is hard to see how this new guidance is fair to the vaccinated, who have thus far done everything that was asked of them. Masks and other social distancing requirements were supposed to be temporary measures — remember ‘two weeks to slow the spread’? — until the vaccines were available. Federal health bureaucrats cannot perpetually deprive people of their rights in the name of public health.”
“The cure for the pandemic is here,” he concluded, “and if people won’t take advantage of it in order to keep themselves safe, at some point — like, now — that’s on them, not the already vaccinated.”
Yet beyond that Breitbart News on Tuesday reported on eight people – Biden, Harris, three hosts of MSNBC’s prime time lineup, CNN’s Brian Stelter, and Govs. Andrew Cuomo and Gavin Newsom – all questioned the vaccines and their effectiveness.
Typical of this were comments by MSNBC’s Joy Reid, who last September tweeted, “I mean, will anyone … anyone at all … ever fully trust the @CDCgov again? And who on God’s earth would trust a vaccine approved by the @US_FDA ?? How do we get a vaccine distributed after this broken, Trumpist nonsense has infected everything? Even if Biden wins?”
Her question was more prescient than even she imagined, because who could believe Biden could win and still bungle things this badly. Liberals, it’s clear, have never trusted the science, their rhetoric to the contrary notwithstanding.
