Conservatives long argued that the work of the Democrats’ special committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol was little more than an anti-Trump show trial.

It appears they were right.

The conservative website The Federalist reported this week that the left-wing members of the J6 Committee admit in a new PBS documentary that “the entire operation was an election-year publicity stunt.”

“Pivotal players on the partisan probe conceded in the two-and-half-hour documentary that the panel’s public performances produced for prime-time television were orchestrated as entertainment media,” the Federalist reported.

Recall that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected the GOP’s picks for the committee and instead, on her own, selected Trump-hating former Republican Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

Pelosi’s choice of Cheney and Kinzinger ensured that the Democrats’ J6 narrative would be the only one heard by the public.

According to the Federalist, the documentary “Democracy on Trial” noted that just ahead of the 2022 elections, the Democrats’ panel brought in former ABC News President James Goldston to produce the televised hearings.

“I got a call pretty much out of the blue from the January 6th committee,” Goldston says in the documentary. “They wanted a storyteller.”

“While they were brilliant lawyers,” Goldston added, “storytelling for a mass audience is not what they do.”

In the documentary, Robert Draper of The New York Times Magazine noted that Goldston envisioned the J6 committee’s hearings “as in a way a kind of miniseries that there would be sort of nine episodes and that these episodes would tackle particular themes.”

The Federalist also noted that Cheney, in her memoir released in December, said the hearings by design “took the form of a trial presentation.” Goldston, she added, was “exceptionally helpful in facilitating that type of presentation.”

In response to “Democracy on Trial,” conservative filmmaker Eric Abbenante posted on X, “The January 6th committee admits the entire thing was a publicity stunt/fabricated TV production meant to manipulate the audience. … Well you failed, and you lost most of the American public for good. Nice try though.”
