illinois cancels 4th of july

Illinois Town Shows Black And Gay Pride, But Cancels The Fourth Of July

Last week, Juneteenth – recalling the day in 1865 when the last slaves learned they were free after the end of the Civil War – became a federal holiday just in time for, well, Juneteenth.

In Evanston, Illinois, a left-wing suburb of Chicago that earlier this year approved a $10 million slavery reparations scheme for black residents, they hosted food and music in city park on Saturday as part of a public celebration of the new holiday.

Meanwhile, the federal government’s latest effort to recognize an important piece of American history, and give overpaid bureaucrats more time off, came in the middle of Pride Month.

So, next weekend, Evanston will conduct its annual Gay Pride parade, which will feature “a car parade, a community picnic, and an evening candle-lighting ceremony.

The event theme is ‘Proud to Be,’ which organizers say will celebrate ‘the deep intersectionality of the LGBTQIA+ community with other marginalized communities.’”

But one thing Evanston won’t celebrate is the event that made all of this possible, the Fourth Of July.

The pandemic is to blame, according to Evanston’s 4th Of July website, “Based on concern for public health due to the unpredictability of the pandemic’s impact, vaccination rates, and in cooperation with our local authorities, the Trustees of the Evanston Fourth of July Association voted to cancel the Fun Run, Parade, Palatine Concert Band performance and Lakefront Fireworks show on July 4, 2021.”

According to The New York Times COVID-19 database, Illinois, a state with almost 13 million people, reported just 98 new COVID cases on Saturday. The rolling seven-day average of virus-related deaths was 16, the lowest level since mid-August.

Yet the Fourth of July had to go.

This simply seems just more contempt for traditional American celebrations – and not unlike last summer, when the lefty public health tyrants were telling us to stay locked up inside our own homes, unless we wanted to go out to protest “systemic racism,” which made it OK because racism itself is a “public health” threat.
