Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois said Tuesday that Democrats should save Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson from a motion to vacate if he puts aid to Ukraine up for a vote.
Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia filed a motion to vacate the chair on March 22 after a $1.2 trillion spending bill passed the House of Representatives. Democrats are pushing for passage of a foreign aid package that includes $60 billion for Ukraine, in addition for aid to Taiwan and Israel.
“Look, if Speaker Johnson brings Ukraine aid to the floor and other aid packages to the floor and does the right thing, and then Marjorie Taylor Greene seeks to remove him or moves to remove him, I think that Democrats would join in a motion to kill such a maneuver because he should not be punished for doing the right thing,” Krishnamoorthi said on CNN.

Eight Republicans joined with every Democrat to remove former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in a 216-210 vote in October.
“Among my Republican colleagues, especially moderates and others, they feel that there isn’t a lot of support for her motion, and therefore she may not make it,” Krishnamoorthi said. “But all that being said, we should be prepared for anything and we‘ve seen this movie before, and so we‘ll be, I think, not surprised if it happens. But I‘m hoping that if he does the right thing, he won‘t be punished for doing that.”
