A federal judge has overturned Illinois’ ban on semiautomatic weapons, citing recent Supreme Court rulings that strongly protect the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
The ruling applies statewide, effectively nullifying the Protect Illinois Communities Act, which was passed in response to the tragic Highland Park mass shooting in 2022.

The law banned AR-15 rifles and similar firearms, high-capacity magazines, and various attachments.
Governor J.B. Pritzker and Attorney General Kwame Raoul have vowed to appeal the decision, which will be delayed for 30 days.
