Gedion Masunsu, a 28-year-old Ugandan national illegally residing in the United States, has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following charges of assaulting a pregnant woman in Massachusetts.

Masunsu was arrested in connection with an incident on January 25th in Waltham, where he was charged with two counts of assault and battery on a pregnant victim and destruction of property.

“Not only is Gedion Masunsu in this country illegally, he savagely assaulted a pregnant Massachusetts resident, endangering the victim and her unborn child,” said Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston. “We will not tolerate such acts of violence against the members of our New England communities. ICE stands firm in our commitment to prioritizing public safety by arresting and removing alien offenders from our streets.”

Masunsu’s initial attempt to enter the United States occurred on April 14, 2021, at Boston Logan International Airport. He used an expired visa. U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued him an order of expedited removal but subsequently paroled him into the U.S.

The Waltham Police Department arrested Masunsu on January 6th on the assault and property destruction charges. ICE lodged an immigration detainer with the Waltham District Court that same day, but the court reportedly failed to honor the detainer and released Masunsu.

He is now in ICE custody.
