Wokeism, as a California case seems to indicate, can get people killed.
According to the local media in Bakersfield, sheriff’s detectives in Tulare County were searching for 24-year-old Jose Omar Bello Reyes as a murder suspect.
Investigators believe Reyes and two other men were involved in the shooting death of a 58-year-old man whose body was dumped in an orchard.
Reyes’ two alleged accomplices were arrested and face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. They were being held without bail.
Local media reported that deputies discovered a dozen weapons as well as a pound of cocaine, a pound of heroin, a pound and a half of fentanyl, and more than $15,000 in cash after serving search warrants in the case. Detectives even found a grenade launcher at an address associated with the suspects.
Accordingly, Reyes is also wanted on a warrant for illegal drugs and guns in a different county.
At first glance, this seems like a purely local crime.
But the details of Reyes’ background illustrate the failure of woke politics.
Breitbart News reported that Reyes is an illegal immigrant.
In May 2018, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement arrested him and gave him a court date before an immigration judge. Pending that, he went free on $10,000 bail. At that time, he already had violent record as a juvenile.
Reyes subsequently fought the deportation order, Breitbart noted. He even sought a visa to remain in America.
Yet in January 2019, he was arrested again, this time for drunk driving. He was convicted three months later.
The following month, in May 2019, Reyes was released again by local authorities. He turned up at an immigration protest that denounced ICE for enforcing the law. A couple days later, ICE again arrested Reyes. His previous bail was revoked and the amount was upped to $50,000.
As the local media noted, less than two days before that arrest, Reyes read a poem called “Dear America” at a meeting involving ICE and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. Reyes denounced America’s immigration policies, such as family separation and the detention of immigrants facing deportation proceedings.
According to Breitbart, the mainstream media rallied behind his cause. The ACLU, which was representing Reyes at the time, claimed the arrest was retaliation for reading the poem.
That got the attention of some influential people.
Reyes was released again in August 2019, Breitbart noted, because then-Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman, New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis, the NFL Players Coalition, the New York Immigration Freedom Fund, and the National Bail Fund Network all chipped in to pay his $50,000 bail.
Norman, in a statement issued at the time, said, “Jose Bello was exercising a fundamental right that we pride ourselves on as Americans. If he was detained for reciting a peaceful poem then we should really ask ourselves, are our words truly free?”
“This is America, right? Where the First Amendment is freedom of speech unless I missed the memo somewhere. He was exercising that right,” Norman added.
Apparently, Reyes was allowed to roam. In September, local media reported, he was arrested yet again on suspicion of 22 counts of drugs and firearms charges. He was released after posting $50,000 bail.
Now, he’s being sought as a murder suspect, a conviction for which might mean the end of his life of crime, and a 58-year-old man is dead – all because some liberals believe that in America it’s the cops who are the bad guys, and woke politics must prevail, regardless of the risk to public safety.
