An illegal immigrant accused of attempting to murder a Jewish man in Chicago was previously released into the U.S. by Border Patrol.

Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, allegedly shot a Jewish man in broad daylight on Saturday. When police officers responded to the scene, Abdellahi reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” and opened fire on them.

He is now facing multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Abdallahi, originally from Mauritania, entered the U.S. illegally in 2023. He was encountered by Border Patrol agents near San Ysidro, California, but was subsequently released into the interior of the country.

This case has sparked outrage and concern, particularly among Jewish groups, who point to the possibility of antisemitic motives behind the attack. The incident comes amid a rise in antisemitic crimes and behavior in the U.S. following the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel in October.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has faced criticism for his statement on the shooting, which omitted the victim’s Jewish identity. This stands in contrast to a more detailed statement he released following the murder of a Palestinian-American child last year.

Abdellahi’s case highlights the ongoing debate surrounding border security and immigration enforcement. It raises concerns about the potential risks posed by individuals who enter the country illegally and the need for stricter screening and vetting procedures.
