A 53-year-old Idaho man who is on probation used a fake $100 bill to pay for a meal at Florida McDonald’s.
Deputies say he had more fake money in his pockets and suspected counterfeiting equipment with his belongings when detectives arrested him Wednesday.
James Brian Oaksmith, 53, is charged with uttering a counterfeit note and possession of 10 or more counterfeit notes, according to Collier County Sheriff’s Office.
“This was excellent teamwork by our alert and astute deputies and detectives,” Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said.

According to deputies, around 1:35 p.m., Oaksmith ordered a meal at McDonald’s at 7785 Davis Blvd. and paid for it with a fake $100 bill.
Recognizing the money was fake, workers returned it to Oaksmith and took back the meal he purchased. Detectives responded and detained Oaksmith for investigation.
Minutes earlier, deputies had responded to the nearby LaQuinta Inn, where they helped escort Oaksmith from the hotel premises at the request of management. Oaksmith left his belongings in the hotel foyer and walked over to McDonald’s.
In Oaksmith’s belongings, detectives saw items in plain view that could be used to manufacture counterfeit money.
Those items included acetone, laundry detergent, press boards, a laptop computer, and a printer. Oaksmith left behind printer paper and latex gloves in the room he had rented at the hotel, and the sink appeared to be covered in black ink, arrest reports said.
Deputies found multiple counterfeit bills and washed dollar bills in Oaksmith’s pockets and on the floor under his table in the restaurant.
Oaksmith is currently on probation out of Idaho.
