In a significant move to reinforce American energy leadership, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright joined President Trump Friday to announce the approval of a new export authorization for the Commonwealth LNG project in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.
This marks the first major U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) project to receive export authorization for non-free trade agreement (FTA) countries since the Trump administration reversed the Biden-Harris administration’s freeze on LNG export permits. The decision underscores the administration’s commitment to unleashing American energy dominance and supporting the nation’s economy.

“President Trump has outlined a bold agenda for unleashing American energy dominance, and restoring regular order on U.S. LNG export permits is critical for meeting this commitment to the American people,” Secretary Wright stated. “Today marks one of many steps that DOE will be taking to assure our future as a reliable energy supplier to the world and resume regular order to our regulatory responsibilities over natural gas exports.”
The Commonwealth LNG project, owned by Kimmeridge Texas Gas, LLC, is poised to become a cornerstone of U.S. energy exports. Once operational, the facility will have the capacity to export over 1.2 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas as LNG, further solidifying the United States’ position as the world’s leading LNG exporter.
The conditional authorization allows Commonwealth LNG to export to non-FTA countries, with the Department of Energy (DOE) citing significant economic benefits, diversification of global LNG supplies, and enhanced energy security for U.S. allies and trading partners through 2050.

The approval comes as the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects record-breaking LNG exports in 2025, averaging over 15 Bcf/d. This surge in exports is supported by unprecedented levels of domestic natural gas production, which currently stands at nearly 105 Bcf/d. The Commonwealth LNG project is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting growing global demand for clean, reliable energy while creating jobs and stimulating economic growth at home.
“Exporting American LNG strengthens the U.S. economy and supports American jobs while bolstering energy security around the world,” Secretary Wright emphasized. “I am proud to be working with President Trump to get American energy exports back on track.”
The Trump administration’s decision to lift the Biden-Harris administration’s freeze on LNG export permits has been widely praised by energy industry leaders and policymakers who argue that the move will restore America’s competitive edge in the global energy market. Critics of the previous administration’s policies have long contended that the freeze undermined U.S. energy independence and economic potential.
The DOE’s conditional authorization for Commonwealth LNG is a key milestone in the project’s development, with a final order expected later this year.
The project is anticipated to not only boost U.S. LNG exports but also strengthen relationships with international partners by providing a stable and secure energy supply.
