U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Wednesday the apprehension of a 29-year-old Brazilian national illegally present in the United States, who was convicted of manslaughter in his native country. The arrest occurred on January 25th in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The individual, whose name was not released, had been convicted in Brazil for manslaughter while driving a motor vehicle and subsequently failed to appear for his prison sentence.

“This Brazilian fugitive attempted to flee justice in his home country by hiding out in Massachusetts,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde. “He presented a threat to the residents of our communities that we will not tolerate. ICE will not allow our New England communities to become a safe haven for the world’s bad actors. We will continue to arrest and remove them from our streets.”

A Brazilian court convicted the fugitive on December 11, 2018, and sentenced him to four years, eight months, and 21 days in prison.

Prior to his arrest in Massachusetts, the fugitive had illegally entered the United States near Hidalgo, Texas, on November 22, 2018. U.S. Border Patrol apprehended him, issued an order of expedited removal, and subsequently released him on his own recognizance.

The Brazilian national remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
