ICE: 16 Charged In California For Illegal Re-Entry, Including Murder Suspect, Sex Offender

Federal prosecutors have charged 16 individuals with illegal re-entry into the United States after removal, including a murder suspect and a convicted sex offender, the Justice Department announced today. The arrests, a collaborative effort between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal law enforcement partners, highlight the ongoing efforts to apprehend and prosecute those who violate immigration laws.

Many of the defendants have prior felony convictions, including serious offenses such as sexual abuse of children.

The charges carry varying penalties, with potential prison sentences ranging from two to 20 years, depending on the defendant’s criminal history.

Key Cases:

  • United States v. Saravia-Sanchez:
    • Jose Cristian Saravia-Sanchez, 30, of El Salvador, was charged after being arrested for the February 25th murder of a man in Inglewood.
    • He was previously removed in 2013 and illegally re-entered the U.S.
    • During his arrest, a firearm was found in his possession.
    • He also has a prior felony conviction for vehicle theft.
    • He is currently in state custody for the murder charge.

  • United States v. Marquina-Sierra:
    • Francisco Marquina-Sierra, 32, of Mexico, was charged for illegal re-entry after a 2013 removal.
    • His criminal history includes convictions for second-degree robbery and child abuse.
    • He is being held without bond.

  • United States v. Barreto:
    • Luis Enrique Barreto, 38, of Mexico, a convicted sex offender, was charged with failure to register under SORNA and illegal re-entry.
    • He was convicted of lewd acts upon a child in 2012.
    • He was found living near a school at the time of his arrest.
    • He is being held without bond.

The cases are being investigated by ICE and Homeland Security Investigations, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys.
