TAMPA, Fla. – Record rainfall from Hurricane Milton has overwhelmed a critical pump station in Hillsborough County, leading to severe flooding in the University Community area.
The Duck Pond pump station, located near the University of South Florida, is the County’s largest stormwater facility, designed to protect the area from flooding during major storms. However, the station lost power Wednesday night when the area was inundated with 10.7 inches of rain – exceeding a 100-year flood event.

With the pump station operating at limited capacity, Hillsborough County is working urgently to restore full power. Officials are also coordinating closely with the City of Tampa to manage pumping operations and prevent further flooding downstream.
