The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is investigating hundreds of migrants in the United States with suspected connections to Tren de Aragua, a dangerous international crime syndicate originating from Venezuela.

According to NBC News, DHS officials have identified over 600 individuals as “subjects of interest,” with approximately 100 confirmed as gang members. The remaining individuals may be victims, witnesses, or associates of the gang.

Tren de Aragua’s Growing Presence

Tren de Aragua, which began as a prison gang in Venezuela in 2013, has rapidly expanded its operations across South America and into the United States. The gang has a confirmed presence in 15 states and a possible presence in eight others.

Since October 2022, ICE agents have apprehended over 100 individuals with suspected ties to Tren de Aragua, with many facing immigration violations or federal prosecution.

DHS Response

A DHS spokesperson confirmed the ongoing operation to counter Tren de Aragua’s activities, stating that they are re-screening previously encountered individuals and conducting rigorous vetting at the border. Those confirmed or suspected to be gang members are referred for prosecution or expedited removal.

Challenges in Identification

Identifying Tren de Aragua members among migrants arriving at the U.S. border is challenging due to strained relations with the Venezuelan government, which does not share criminal histories with U.S. authorities. Law enforcement experts believe the actual number of Tren de Aragua members in the U.S. is likely much higher than the 600 identified by DHS.

Gang’s Criminal Activity

Tren de Aragua has been linked to various crimes across the U.S., including:

  • A gang takeover of apartment complexes in Aurora, Colorado
  • The shooting of two NYPD officers
  • Other high-profile crimes nationwide

Border Crisis Fuels Concerns

The unprecedented surge in illegal border crossings under the Biden administration has exacerbated concerns about criminal activity linked to migrants. Fiscal year 2024 saw over 2.1 million migrant encounters at the southern border, bringing the total during Biden’s presidency to roughly 8.5 million. This figure does not include the hundreds of thousands of migrants flown into the country through government programs.

The influx of Venezuelan migrants has raised alarm bells, as some have been confirmed members of Tren de Aragua. Authorities are working to address the growing threat posed by this international criminal organization.
