TAMPA, Fla. – Jose del Carmen Sanchez-Garcia, a 42-year-old Honduran national, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for illegally re-entering the United States without authorization. U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara handed down the sentence today.

Sanchez-Garcia pleaded guilty to the charge on December 27, 2024.

According to court documents, federal law enforcement discovered Sanchez-Garcia’s presence in the United States on February 1, 2023, following his arrest by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on state criminal charges. It was determined that Sanchez-Garcia had no legal permission to be in the country.

The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Buchanan.
