U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took a 23-year-old Venezuelan national into custody on February 6 after the man entered the agency’s Detroit office and requested to be arrested.
The individual, who is in the U.S. illegally, told ICE officers that if they did not detain him, he would “go out and commit crimes.”
The unusual incident unfolded when the man, whose name has not been released, walked into the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Detroit field office and voluntarily surrendered.

According to ICE, the man stated that he felt he had no other options and feared he would resort to criminal activity if not taken into custody.
“We’re grateful that this individual self-reported and turned himself over to ICE before going out and threatening public safety,” said Robert Lynch, Field Office Director for ICE ERO Detroit.
