Hollywood actor Jon Cryer had a heated discussion with HBO host Bill Maher over child sex change procedures during an episode of Maher’s “Random Club” podcast released Sunday.

Legislation restricting child sex changes has passed in at least 20 states, according to the New York Times, and the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in United States v. Skrmetti, a case centered on a challenge to Tennessee’s law prohibiting child sex change procedures, in December.

After Maher told Cryer why he opposed child sex changes, the “Two and a Half Men” star claimed that child sex changes are more common because it is now societally acceptable, comparing it to the increased prevalence of “left-handedness” because people “stopped training themselves to be right-handed.”

“You’re asking too much often,” Maher told Cryer. “To rewrite, like, the idea that when someone is born, there is a default setting for humans, male and female. Not everyone is, now, a real conservative would say, ‘No, everyone is.’ I would never say that — ” he added before being interrupted.

During a back and forth with Cryer, Maher, who previously noted that countries “liberals look to” as examples have increasingly restricted child sex change procedures, took aim at the notion that children are able to choose to change their sex.

“Children don’t know shit about anything,” Maher told Cryer. “The idea that I would, as a child, would have had to have dealt with something like this.”

“Well, again, the people who go through it don’t say, ‘This is the life I want.’ No parent wants to be in the midst of these choices,” Cryer claimed.

“Some kids these days actually do want to be trans,” Maher responded. “It’s cooler, Jon. It’s a thing.”

After Maher noted the increasing frequency of child sex changes, Cryer compared children being openly transgender to being left-handed.

“There’s a societal suppression. It’s like left-handedism,” Cryer claimed. “Left-handed, being left-handed, was suppressed for thousands of years amongst human beings. But once it was, apparently in the thirties, scientists basically said, There’s no … left-handedness doesn’t actually do anything bad, left-handedness just shot up. People just stopped training themselves to be right-handed … This has happened societally before and that’s the closest analog that I can think of.”
