HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Hillsborough County Pet Resources is taking swift action to protect the health of its canine residents in response to an outbreak of canine influenza. Approximately 290 dogs are being temporarily relocated from the Pet Resource Center to a separate county-owned facility, with most expected to return by mid-July.

To prevent further spread of the highly contagious virus, the shelter will not accept new dogs or facilitate adoptions or foster placements until July 14. The Pet Resource Center will also be closed for deep cleaning and disinfection from Wednesday, June 26, through Saturday, June 29.

During this closure, staff will be divided into two teams to minimize cross-contamination, and all relocated dogs will undergo testing for canine influenza before returning to the center.

While canine influenza can cause symptoms such as coughing, nasal discharge, fever, lethargy, and reduced appetite, most dogs recover within two to three weeks. However, in rare cases, the virus can lead to severe complications or even death.

The Pet Resource Center will reopen on Monday, July 1, offering normal services for cats, including adoptions, foster placement, and intake. Dog operations are expected to resume on July 15.

This decisive action by Hillsborough County Pet Resources demonstrates their commitment to prioritizing the well-being of the animals in their care.
