Hillsborough County Kicks Off Hiking Spree With Special Holiday And New Year’s Hikes

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Hillsborough County is inviting residents to start the ninth annual Hiking Spree on the right foot with two special hikes designed to engage participants and kick off the season in style.

The Hiking Spree, which began on Dec. 1, 2024, and runs through April 30, 2025, encourages residents to explore the county’s parks and preserves, stay active, and connect with nature.

Participants who complete at least eight hikes from a list of about two dozen trails can earn a limited-edition patch, medallion for a walking stick, or pet bandana.

Special Hikes:

  • Holiday Light Night Hike:
    • When: Dec. 21, 5 p.m.
    • Where: Seffner CommUNITY Park, 406 N. Kingsway Rd., Seffner, FL 33584
    • Details: A family-friendly guided night hike illuminated by festive holiday lights, perfect for getting into the seasonal spirit.
  • New Year’s Day Hike:
    • When: Jan. 1, 9 a.m.
    • Where: Lettuce Lake Park, 6920 E. Fletcher Ave., Tampa, FL 33637
    • Details: Begin the new year with a refreshing hike through one of Hillsborough County’s most scenic parks. This event includes a $5 fee, and participants are encouraged to register.

The Hiking Spree’s trail list spans 21 parks and preserves, offering a range of environments and trails rated from easy to strenuous. Trail lengths vary, accommodating hikers of all ages and abilities, including wheelchair-accessible options.

Timed to coincide with cooler weather and prime bird-watching season, the Hiking Spree is an excellent opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to discover the natural beauty of Hillsborough County.
