HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners has decided not to include a school tax increase referendum on the upcoming November 2024 ballot. In a narrow 4-3 vote during Wednesday’s meeting, the commission opted to postpone the millage referendum to November 2026.

Earlier this year, at the April Hillsborough County School Board meeting, school board members had approved placing a millage referendum before voters for the November 2024 election.

Under a governing statute empowering them to determine ballot content, the commission elected to delay the referendum by two years.

The proposed one-mill ad valorem tax increase was projected to last four years and impose an average annual cost of approximately $281 per homeowner.

The school district anticipated that this millage would generate approximately $177 million annually, earmarked to enhance support for Hillsborough County’s students.

The intended allocation of these funds included a $6,000 supplement for teachers and a $3,000 supplement for support staff as part of broader efforts to bolster educational programs and personnel compensation.
