HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Summer reading is critical for a child’s development, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library hosts a summer reading program with interactive events, reading challenges, and prizes for all ages.
Join the Reading Challenge. Log reading and activities to unlock digital badges and fun prizes like Apple Air Pods and tickets to ZooTampa. The registration portal, Beanstack, includes themed-reading suggestions for kids, tweens, teens, and adults.
According to the Northwest Evaluation Association, school-year gains in reading and math may decrease by 20 to 50% during the summer months.

Reading during the school-year gap helps a child’s critical thinking skills and ability to retain information and encourages an interest in reading for pleasure. Children also learn by example, so it is beneficial for parents and caregivers to also develop reading habits.
Children can participate simultaneously in the Reading with the Rays program this summer. Pick up your Reading with the Rays game card at your preferred library branch to be eligible for more prizes. Youth may keep track of their hours read in Beanstack and on the Rays card. Once the game card is completed, turn it in to your local public library for a chance to win Tampa Bay Rays prizes, including tickets to a Rays home game.
Almost 2,500 Rays tickets went to Hillsborough County readers last summer.
The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library offers Summer Reading in partnership with ZooTampa, the Tampa-Hillsborough County Children’s Library Foundation, Friends of the Library of Tampa-Hillsborough County Inc., and the Hillsborough County Government.
