Brockton High School in Massachusetts has been grappling with escalating levels of violence, chaos, and security concerns among its students.
In response to the alarming situation, a group of Massachusetts educators has appealed to Governor Maura Healey to deploy the Massachusetts National Guard to restore order and ensure the safety of students and staff.
“Over the past few months, our high school has experienced a disturbing increase in incidents related to violence, security concerns, and substance abuse,” a letter from four of the committee’s seven members read.
Teachers have reported shocking levels of chaos and violence within the school premises, which have compromised the learning environment and jeopardized the safety of students, staff, and the wider community.

The committee members have requested Mayor Robert Sullivan to seek the deployment of the Massachusetts National Guard to address the escalating challenges at Brockton High School.
“We’re not asking them to deploy a whole army to our school. We’re asking for support,” committee member Ana Oliver said.
“If you support safety in our schools, you will support the National Guard to come in here and keep our schools safe,” said Tony Rodrigues, another committee member.
The letter highlights the critical need for external intervention due to a disturbing increase in incidents. It points out the severity of the challenges faced by the school, including a concerning rise in teacher absenteeism and incidents of students wandering the halls, engaging in altercations, and causing disruptions in classrooms.

The committee members propose that the National Guard could provide vital temporary intervention while a comprehensive, long-term solution is developed in consultation with all relevant stakeholders. National Guard personnel could assist as hall monitors or even substitute teachers, contributing their expertise in crisis management and community support.
While the plea for National Guard support has gained traction among some educators and committee members, others, including Mayor Robert Sullivan and City Councilor At-Large Winthrop Farwell Jr., have expressed reservations about this proposed intervention.
Mayor Sullivan has voiced his opposition to the use of the National Guard at Brockton High School, although his specific reasons have not been disclosed.
Councilor Farwell Jr. emphasizes the need for input from classroom teachers in developing strategies to address the escalating problems in schools, suggesting that relying solely on soldiers in military field uniforms may not be the optimal solution.
The plea for National Guard support has reached Governor Maura Healey, who has the authority to deploy the National Guard in times of emergency.
“Our administration is committed to ensuring that schools are safe and supportive environments for students, educators, and staff,” Healey’s office said.
Students are not in class this week. Following the winter break, the police chief will provide an update on efforts to address the issues, according to the mayor.
