The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay Ruskin has issued a Red Flag Warning for interior portions of West Central and Southwest Florida, indicating a high risk of wildfire spread.

The warning is in effect from noon today until 8 PM EDT this evening.

The Red Flag Warning covers the following counties:

  • Sumter
  • Polk
  • Hardee
  • Highlands
  • DeSoto
  • Inland Citrus
  • Inland Hernando
  • Inland Pasco
  • Inland Hillsborough
  • Inland Manatee
  • Inland Sarasota
  • Inland Charlotte
  • Inland Lee

Weather Conditions:

The dangerous fire weather conditions are characterized by:

  • Winds: Northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
  • Relative Humidity: As low as 26 percent.

These conditions, including strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels, create a high risk of rapid fire spread. Any fires that develop will be prone to catching and spreading quickly.
