A 15-year-old boy is being hailed a hero after rescuing a woman whose car plunged into Lake St. Clair on Tuesday.

John Agnello was fishing with his mother near the Lake St. Clair marina when he witnessed the car fly through the air and sink into the deep water.

“I just saw a car flying through the air,” Agnello told WLIX 10. “It was about 45 feet deep in the water, that far.”

Without hesitation, Agnello and another bystander jumped into the water and swam towards the sinking car. The water pressure made it difficult to open the car door, but they managed to free the trapped woman and bring her to shore.

Agnello, determined to ensure no one else was inside, dove back into the submerged vehicle to search.

“The only thing that scared me a little was that I was underwater in the car because I was feeling around in there,” Agnello recalled. “It was quite difficult to get out, but everything was fine.”

The driver was taken to a local hospital, and the cause of the accident is under investigation by St. Clair Shores police.

Agnello’s quick thinking and bravery saved a life, and he has been praised by the community for his heroic actions. His mother, who witnessed the entire rescue, expressed her pride in her son’s courage and selflessness.
