HERNANDO COUNTY, FL. – A Weeki Wachee mother and her six-month-old son died Monday morning after a four-vehicle crash on US-19 in Spring Hill, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say a pickup truck, driven by a 30-year-old Brooksville man, was traveling the wrong way southbound in the northbound lanes of US-19 at Breakwater Boulevard, while the Weeki Wachee woman was driving an SUV eastbound from Breakwater Boulevard and attempted to turn north onto US-19.
Investigators say the woman turned left and into the path of the pickup truck, which collided with the SUV.
After the initial impact Troopers say the pickup struck another SUV that was stopped in the northbound turn lane and propelled that SUV into a fourth vehicle.
The Weeki Wachee woman died at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash. Investigators say the 6-month-son was rushed to an area hospital and later died from injuries suffered in the crash.
The 30-year-old Brooksville man suffered only minor injuries in the crash. No other injuries were reported by FHP.
