HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – Hernando County has issued mandatory evacuation orders for residents in certain areas as Hurricane Milton strengthens and approaches Florida’s Gulf Coast. Evacuations will begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow, October 8th, and residents are urged to reach their safe destination by noon on Wednesday.

Mandatory Evacuation Zones:

  • All areas west of US 19, including evacuation zones A, B, and C.
  • All coastal and low-lying areas.
  • Manufactured homes countywide.

Shelter Information:

While residents are encouraged to seek shelter with family or friends in safe locations, a public shelter will open at 8 a.m. tomorrow at Challenger K-8 (13400 Elgin Blvd, Spring Hill). This shelter will accommodate special needs residents, the general population, and pets.

Pet-Friendly Shelter Tips:

  • Bring an appropriately sized crate.
  • Bring your pet’s medications, food, leash, collar, and vaccination records.
  • Be prepared to care for your pet, as they will be housed separately from you.
