Hernando County Opens Warming Center To Shield Residents From Frigid Temperatures

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – With temperatures predicted to plummet, Hernando County is taking proactive steps to protect its residents from the cold. A warming center will open tonight to provide a safe and warm haven for those in need.

Hernando County Emergency Management, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, Hernando County Community Organizations Active in Disaster, and the City of Brooksville, will operate the warming center at the Enrichment Center, located at 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd. in Brooksville.

Warming Center Details:

  • Dates: Wednesday, January 8th, and Thursday, January 9th
  • Hours: 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM both nights
  • Location: Enrichment Center, 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd., Brooksville, FL 34601

The warming center will offer a place for individuals to escape the cold overnight. However, it’s important to note that meals and cots will not be provided, and pets are not allowed.

In addition to the warming center, county officials are urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their property from the cold:

  • Stay Indoors: Minimize time spent outdoors, especially during the coldest parts of the day and night.
  • Protect Pets: Bring pets indoors and ensure they have adequate shelter.
  • Safeguard Plants: Cover or bring sensitive plants indoors to prevent damage.
  • Prevent Frozen Pipes: Consider running pool pumps overnight to prevent freezing.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor local media or the National Weather Service for updated weather information.
