HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – Hernando County is taking proactive steps to safeguard residents in the face of Hurricane Milton. Emergency Management officials are closely monitoring the storm’s progress and have announced the opening of additional shelters beginning Tuesday, October 8th at 8:00 a.m.

Mandatory Evacuations Ordered for Vulnerable Areas

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for all areas west of US 19, encompassing evacuation zones A, B, and C. This includes residents of coastal and low-lying areas, as well as all those living in manufactured homes countywide.

Shelter Information

While seeking shelter with family or friends in a safe location is strongly encouraged, public shelters will be available for those who require them. Residents are advised to arrive at their chosen shelter location by 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9th.

The following shelters will be open:

  • Challenger K-8 School (13400 Elgin Blvd., Spring Hill)
    • Special Needs Clients
    • General Population
    • Pet Friendly
  • West Hernando Middle School (14325 Ken Austin Pkwy., Brooksville)
    • General Population
    • Pet Friendly
  • Enrichment Center (800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd., Brooksville)
    • General Population
    • Pet Friendly

Important Notes for Pet Owners

Individuals needing the Special Needs Shelter and requiring pet transportation assistance should contact Hernando County Animal Control through the Public Information Center (PIC) at 352-754-4083. The PIC is open Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday starting at 7:00 a.m., and will operate 24/7 thereafter until further notice.

Pet-Friendly Shelter Guidelines

To ensure a smooth experience at pet-friendly shelters, residents are advised to bring their own appropriately sized crates, pet medications, several days’ worth of pet food, leashes, collars, and any items that will provide comfort to their animals. All pets must be up-to-date on vaccinations. Detailed guidelines for pet owners utilizing shelters can be found at www.HernandoCounty.us/EM.
