HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Hillsborough County State Attorney Suzy Lopez issued a stern warning to those who would exploit the vulnerability of residents recovering from Hurricane Milton: “Now is not the time to prey on your neighbors. You will be held accountable, and you can face harsher penalties while our community is under a state of emergency.”
Lopez emphasized that her office is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that criminals are held accountable for their actions. She highlighted that penalties for theft, burglary, robbery, and related crimes are significantly enhanced during a state of emergency. Misdemeanors can be upgraded to felonies, and felonies can be elevated to a higher degree.

This proactive stance comes in response to reports of looting following previous hurricanes. Lopez stressed the importance of community support and vigilance during the recovery process.
“Now is the time to help your neighbors, not steal from them. If you are thinking about taking advantage of storm victims, be ready to accept the consequences. My office stands ready to prosecute thieves to the fullest extent of the law,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.
