A heat advisory has been issued for portions of southwest and west central Florida, effective Friday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. EDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of dangerous heat conditions, with heat indexes expected to reach 112 degrees in some areas.

High temperatures can lead to heatstroke, a serious medical condition that can be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms of heatstroke include high body temperature (above 103°F), confusion, disorientation, rapid and shallow breathing, headache, nausea, and vomiting.

Stay Safe in the Heat

The Florida Department of Health and the NWS urge residents to take precautions to stay safe during the heat advisory. Here are some essential tips:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol, which can dehydrate you further.
  • Limit strenuous activity: Avoid outdoor exertion during the hottest part of the day, typically between 11 am and 4 pm.
  • Seek air conditioning: Spend time in air-conditioned spaces like libraries, malls, or public cooling centers.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing: Choose lightweight, breathable clothing in light colors. Apply sunscreen generously if spending any time outdoors.
  • Never leave children or pets in a parked car: The temperature inside a car can rise rapidly, even on a seemingly mild day, posing a serious danger to occupants.

Additional Tips

  • Take cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature.
  • Check on elderly neighbors or relatives who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
