A weather system currently in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to soak Florida with heavy rains in the coming days.
While this system is unlikely to develop into the season’s first named storm as it crosses the state, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) notes that there’s a slight possibility of slow development once it moves offshore of the southeastern U.S. coast.
Meanwhile, experts at Colorado State University updated their 2024 hurricane season forecast on Tuesday, reaffirming their prediction of an extremely active season.

Their April projection of 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes remains unchanged. This is significantly above the 1991-2020 average of 14.4 named storms, 7.2 hurricanes, and 3.2 major hurricanes.
While the immediate threat of tropical storm development in the Gulf of Mexico is low, the NHC continues to monitor the system closely. Residents in Florida are advised to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
The active hurricane season forecast reminds those in low-lying areas and coastal regions to stay vigilant and prepared throughout the season.
