A former doctor was found guilty on charges of illegally dispensing and distributing opioids from his clinic, the United States Attorney’s Southern District of Florida Office said Thursday.

Daniel Alberto Carpman was found guilty of distributing oxycodone at his pain management clinic, the attorney’s office said in a press release. The 72-year-old was convicted on four counts of illegally distributing opioids and one count of conspiracy to distribute opioids.

“The evidence at trial established that Carpman illegally issued prescriptions for over two million doses of maximum strength, immediate release oxycodone to patients who later resold the medication to drug distributors,” officials said.

Carpman was arrested in 2023, according to the Tampa Free Press, which previously reported this. The attorney’s office alleged in 2023 that the doctor conspired alongside two individuals who had already pleaded guilty for “their roles re-selling the oxycodone acquired at Dr. Carpman’s pain management clinic.”

The scheme lasted from 2018 to 2023, according to the Miami Herald. Carpman was accused of writing thousands of the same prescriptions for elderly patients who would then fill the prescriptions at local pharmacies. The pills were then reportedly sold to the Hialeah distribution ring.

A corrupt federal agent protected the ring, the outlet reported.

Carpman reportedly made $5 million in consulting and fees. Prosecutors said Carpman “sold out his medical license to make $5 million” while he was “masquerading in a lab coat as a drug dealer.”

Carpman’s Clinic, Daniel Carpman, MD Medical Center, is located in Miami, Florida.

The doctor’s sentencing is scheduled for June 22, the attorney’s office said, adding that he was remanded to custody after the jury’s verdict.

Carpman faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on each of the counts.
