Since the dawn of the Trump era, one way liberals have emoted their political proclivities is through yard signs.
They proudly post pablum such as “Hate has no home here,” and “In this house, we believe: Black Lives Matter, women’s rights are human rights, no human is illegal, science is real, love is love, kindness is everything.”
Last October, New York Times columnist Amanda Hess noted of that latter sign, “When the yard sign first appeared, in the wake of the 2016 election, I barely noticed it. … But over the past five years, as the sign spread across the suburbs, I found myself seduced by its chaotic jumble of typefaces, its lifestyle-blog-adjacent aesthetic, its sanctimonious final line, and its curious staying power.”
Hess reported that the sign was the brainchild of Wisconsin librarian Kristin Garvey, who expressed a “mantra among liberals who felt lost in Trump’s America.” The liberal website Mashable called it “the most enduring symbol of anti-Trump resistance,” and “more bold and memorable than anything the Democratic party has come up with in the last four years.”
On Tuesday, pugnacious Gov. Ron DeSantis issued his retort to the touchy-feely realm on the left.
The Florida Republican’s campaign released a short social media commercial with its take on the yard-sign battles.
The ad shows a young girl walking out of her home, only to see a liberal neighbor’s sign. It reads: “In this house, We believe: The government is always right, Fauci knows best, socialism over capitalism, masks should be mandatory, wokeness is everything.”
The girl responds with an eye roll, and plants her own sign.
It says: “In this house, We: Believe parents know best, back the blue, tell Dr. Fauci to pound sand, value our freedom and liberty, love our governor, Ron DeSantis.”
In an email accompanying the video, DeSantis’ Deputy Press Secretary, Delanie Bomar said, “Governor DeSantis’ freedom record speaks for itself. He stands for parents’ rights. He backs the Blue. He tells Fauci to pound sand. He protects freedom and liberty. He fights for everything this sign says and more.”
The sign retails for $20 on DeSantis’ campaign website.
