It appears that Wyoming Republicans have made official what the rest of the country already suspected – or celebrated, for those left-wing political elites inside the Beltway or on cable news.
Rep. Liz Cheney is no longer considered a Republican.
The Associated Press reported on Sunday that the Wyoming Republican Party “will no longer recognize” Liz Cheney as a member of the GOP.
The party’s main committee voted 31-29 over the weekend to no longer view Cheney as one of its own after Republican leaders in nine of Wyoming’s 23 counties had already done so.
In its resolution, the committee ripped Cheney for voting to impeach former President Donald Trump, who captured 70 percent of the vote in Wyoming last year, for instigating the Jan. 6 riot.
“As to date, no quantifiable and or undisputed evidence has been offered [by] Representative Liz Cheney to defend her questionable decision,” the resolution said.
Cheney also alienated mainstream Republicans by accepting Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s appointment to serve as vice chairwoman of the special House Jan. 6 task force, and voting to hold former Trump adviser Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress.
Free Press readers may recall a report from July when House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy began calling Cheney a “Pelosi Republican,” at a time when her favorability rating among the GOP base was 43 percentage points underwater.
A poll taken in Wyoming in April revealed that 52 percent of Republicans there pledged to vote for her 2022 primary opponent, regardless of who it is.
Back in February, as the Free Press reported at the time, the Wyoming GOP leadership voted to formally censure Cheney for that impeachment vote, and called on her to immediately resign.
One the more recent vote by the GOP main committee, Harriet Hageman, one of Cheney’s Republican primary foes who was recently endorsed by Trump, said, “Liz Cheney stopped recognizing what Wyomingites care about a long time ago. When she launched her war against President Trump, she completely broke with where we are as a state.”
