President-elect Donald Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday as the “Gulf of America,” sparking an immediate reaction. The announcement, made during a press conference ahead of his inauguration later this month, is part of a series of high-profile statements and policy previews as Trump prepares to take office.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump told reporters. “What a beautiful name. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”

The proposal quickly gained support from Trump’s allies in Congress. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) took to X (formerly Twitter) shortly after Trump’s remarks, announcing her intention to introduce legislation formalizing the name change.

“President Trump’s second term is off to a GREAT start,” Greene wrote. “I’ll be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”

Trump’s comments highlight his continued focus on U.S.-Mexico relations and his criticism of Mexico’s immigration policies. By proposing the name change, Trump appears to signal a reassertion of U.S. identity and sovereignty in the region.

The name-change proposal came on the heels of Trump’s announcement that DAMAC Properties, a prominent Middle Eastern investment firm, would invest $20 billion in the United States. The funds will support data center projects catering to artificial intelligence and cloud technologies across multiple states.

While the DAMAC investment was widely seen as a boost for U.S. technology infrastructure, Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico diverted attention and reignited partisan debates over his policies and rhetoric.

As Trump prepares to take office, the name-change proposal is expected to face significant pushback, not only from Democrats but also from historians, geographers, and international stakeholders. Still, with allies like Greene promising swift legislative action, the issue could become an early test of Trump’s influence and priorities in his second term.

Whether the Gulf of Mexico officially becomes the Gulf of America remains uncertain, but the proposal underscores Trump’s characteristic approach of blending bold rhetoric with policy plans to capture public attention and energize his base.
