Some Republicans in Congress have called for military strikes against Mexican drug lords. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (MTG) of Georgia actually wants the U.S. to go to war with them.
The Georgia Republican recently filed a formal declaration of war against 10 Mexican drug cartels.
Per the Constitution, only Congress can officially declare war on another nation. The last time that happened was in 1942 when Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania sided with Germany and Italy in World War II.

In her resolution, which was filed in October and reported on earlier this week by the website Govtrack, Greene identified the following as the enemy:
The Sinaloa cartel, the Jalisco New General cartel, the Los Zetas and Cartel del Noreste, the Gulf cartel, the Tijuana cartel, the Juarez cartel and La Linea, the Beltran-Levya Organization, the Guerreros Unidos, the Los Rojos, and La Familia Michoacána and Knights Templar cartel.
Greene’s resolution notes that this action is needed to fight the cartels’ drug-running, human-trafficking, and illegal-immigrant smuggling operations — whose combined activities generate nearly $200 billion a year for the drug lords.
Greene provided several examples of why America must take action.
They included the fact that 300 Americans die each day from fentanyl smuggling.
She also noted that the cartels have infiltrated the nearly 8 million illegal border crossers under President Joe Biden with “military-aged men (who) are on the United States terrorist watchlist, and are gang members who are killing Americans and are a direct threat to our national security.”
She also pointed out that in March 2022, the Mexican army raided four houses controlled by the Sinaloa Cartel and recovered 2.8 million rounds of ammunition, 89 hand grenades, 20 machine guns, six .50-caliber sniper rifles, more than 150 handguns and automatic rifles, and bulletproof vests.

“The Mexican cartels are executing the complete invasion of our country,” Greene argued in the resolution. “These ruthless, violent, criminal organizations have associates, facilitators, and brokers in all 50 States of the United States.”
“The President is hereby authorized and directed to employ the entire naval and military forces of the United States and the resources of the Government to carry on war against such Cartels; and, to protect the citizens of the United States, all of the resources of the country are hereby pledged by the Congress of the United States,” Greene’s resolution states.
“The United States is not in a state of war with the United Mexican States (Mexico),” she also clarified, adding that “it is in the interest of the United States to work with the Government of Mexico to carry on war against such Cartels.”
As the Tampa Free Press has reported, some GOP lawmakers, such as Rep. Matt Gaetz and Sen. Lindsey Graham, have called on President Joe Biden to issue military strikes against the cartels, but have not sought to formally declare war on them.
