Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced the introduction of a bill to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” following a recent proposal by President-elect Donald Trump. Greene unveiled the text of her legislation on Tuesday, framing the move as a necessary step to assert American sovereignty over the vital maritime region.
In her statement, Congresswoman Greene emphasized the significance of the Gulf to U.S. security, commerce, and national identity.
“Mexican cartels currently use the Gulf of Mexico to traffic humans, drugs, weapons, and God knows what else while the Mexican government allows them to do it,” Greene said. “The American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted.”
Greene underscored the role of the U.S. military in safeguarding the Gulf. “Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries. It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America, and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as,” she stated.

Greene revealed that her team had quickly drafted the legislation with the assistance of legislative counsel and plans to formally file the bill on Thursday.
“As soon as President Trump made his announcement, I directed my staff to get the bill drafted,” Greene said. “Congress has to take the Trump Agenda mandate seriously, and that means acting fast to enact it.”
The renaming effort follows remarks by President-elect Trump last week, in which he expressed support for rebranding the Gulf of Mexico to reflect America’s dominant role in securing and managing the region.
Trump’s comments, which sparked widespread debate, have been embraced by supporters as a bold assertion of national pride and ownership.
